Two engraving techniques (light lines / dark lines) – same impression, different effect

For our individually engraved jewelry pieces for fingerprints, footprints, handprints, or even paw prints or nose prints, there are two different engraving techniques that are often confused. Important to note:

It is not about a light or dark engraving.
The difference lies exclusively in which lines of the fingerprint are engraved.
So it’s about the layout.

You could also say that one is a positive and the other a negative engraving (not emotionally but technically)!

Example of a layout file from us:

Variant 1: Engraving of the light lines

Here, the raised, light lines of the fingerprint are precisely engraved into the precious metal.
The dark spaces remain smooth.
The result often appears somewhat calmer, more even, and finer.

Variant 2: Engraving of the black lines (our standard and what 99% want!)

With this technique, the dark lines of the fingerprint are engraved.
The light lines remain raised.
This creates a stronger contrast and the print appears deeper, more striking, and more three-dimensional.

Important to know

• Material, color, and surface remain identical
• The jewelry is not lighter or darker
• The fingerprint is the same – only the engraved lines differ
• Both variants are high-quality, durable, and true to detail

Which engraving technique is right is purely a matter of taste – whether you prefer gentle and elegant or expressive and high-contrast.
