Oxidation in jewelry (patina)

Oxidation in jewelry refers to a chemical reaction between metal and oxygen in the air, often in combination with moisture and other environmental influences. This forms a patina or discoloration on the surface, making the metal appear darker or duller.

Commonly affected metals:

  • Silver: Forms silver sulfide with sulfur compounds from the air, which becomes visible as a black or dark discoloration.
  • Copper & Brass: Develop a greenish or brownish patina through oxidation processes.
  • Bronze: Can develop a green or blue patina.
  • Gold (low carat, e.g., 9K or 14K): Can also discolor due to alloy metals (e.g., copper).

Note: In our shop, you will only find high-quality precious metals. Nevertheless, without coating, oxidation can occur depending on skin type and environment!

Advantages of oxidation:

  • Creates a vintage or antique look.
  • Can be intentionally used to highlight details in engravings or embellishments.

Disadvantages of oxidation:

  • Jewelry often looks tarnished or unkempt.
  • Can cause skin discoloration (especially with copper or brass alloys).

Prevention and removal:

  • Regular cleaning with silver or metal polishes.
  • Storage in airtight bags or with anti-tarnish cloths.
  • Home remedies like baking soda, lemon juice, or vinegar can remove light oxidation marks.

Help through anti-oxidation coating

An anti-oxidation coating is a special protective layer applied to jewelry to prevent or slow down the natural oxidation and tarnishing of the metal. These coatings act as a barrier against oxygen, moisture, and other environmental influences that lead to chemical reactions and discoloration.

Types of anti-oxidation coatings:

  1. Rhodium plating
    • Especially used for silver and white gold jewelry.
    • Prevents oxidation and gives a shiny look.
    • Wears off over time and can be renewed.
  2. Lacquer or protective coating layers (e.g. clear coat, nano-coatings)
    • Forms an invisible protective layer on the piece of jewelry.
    • Often used for brass, bronze or copper.
    • Can peel off over time and needs to be renewed.
  3. E-coating (electrophoretic coating)
    • A transparent or slightly tinted protective layer.
    • Very durable and protects against corrosion and discoloration.
    • Often used for fashion jewelry.
  4. Gold or Silver Plating (Gilding, Silver Plating)
    • A thin layer of precious metal protects the underlying metal.
    • Helps to delay oxidation, but wears off over time.
  5. Wax or Oil Sealing
    • A temporary solution, especially used for copper or bronze.
    • Needs to be renewed regularly.

Advantages of an anti-oxidation coating:

✅ Reduces skin reactions (e.g., green discoloration from copper alloys).
✅ Saves cleaning effort.

Disadvantages:

❌ Coating can wear off over time.
❌ Can be damaged by chemicals (e.g., perfume, sweat, cleaning agents).
❌ Some coatings change the natural look of the metal.
